Nose hair, as annoying (and unsightly) as it is, plays an important role in our overall health. Collectively, they are the body’s filter, responsible for preventing dust, pollen, and other particles from reaching the lungs. And they really work – but it depends on the density.

According a published study speak International Archives of Allergy and Immunology, “The rate of asthma was 44.7, 26.2, and 16.7 percent in the low, moderate, and high groups, respectively.” The “little, moderate, many” group refers to the amount of nose hair the individual had, and the “a lot” group was found to be the most protected against seasonal allergens (like pollen).

That doesn’t mean you should let your nose hair grow out, though, despite evidence suggesting it’s effective protection against seasonal allergies. Nose hair is a matter of personal preference, not medical, so you should only treat it as you see fit. However, there is a right way to do it.

Picking vs pruning

Although hair removal is not permanent – if you pluck out a hair, it will likely grow back – there are more risks associated with this form of hair removal than with cutting, for example. Plucked hair leaves vacant follicles, which can lead to ingrown hairs or infection. Trimming is best despite the satisfaction some people get from pulling out a few hairs with force. Just ask the former NBA player Ira Beginnerwho missed several games (and spent eight days in hospital) with an ingrown hair.

What to look for

Although many body trimmers come with nose hair trimmer attachments, you’re probably better off getting a dedicated tool. Why? Well, nose hair grows fast – and up to six feet long in our lifetime – and you could prune up to once a week. Sure, your multi-head body trimmer could get the job done, but these do-it-all models are rarely top of the line in any category – they’re masters of none, if you will. It’s best to get the best tool possible all category, not one that barely does them all.
