Permanent hair loss can confuse people, but there are a number of natural remedies that have shown promise in boosting hair growth. Vitamin E, for example, which helps maintain healthy skin and eyes and strengthens the body’s natural defenses against disease and infection, has been shown to improve hair loss.
He says, “Patients with alopecia generally have lower levels of antioxidants in their scalp region as well as a higher lipid peroxidation index.”
He explains, “Tocotrienols belong to the vitamin E family and are known to be powerful antioxidants.
“Therefore, a study was conducted to investigate the effect of tocotrienol supplementation on hair growth in volunteers suffering from hair loss.

The study reads: “In conclusion, this trial demonstrated that tocotrienol capsule supplementation increases hair count in volunteers with hair loss compared to the placebo group.
“This observed effect was most likely due to the antioxidant activity of tocotrienols which helped to reduce lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress in the scalp, which are believed to be associated with alopecia.”
Certain treatments can help with hair loss and hair health. Finasteride and minoxidil are the main treatments for male pattern baldness.
Minoxidil can also be used to treat female pattern baldness. Women should not use finasteride.
“Many medications, including minoxidil and finasteride, are not safe for pregnant women or women who want to become pregnant.”
The Cleveland Clinic states, “It is important to note that premenopausal women should not take medication for the treatment of hair loss without using contraception.”
Some wigs are available on the NHS, but you may have to pay unless you qualify for financial support.
The Health Department says some types of hair loss are permanent, such as male and female pattern baldness. It is estimated, for example, that around 40% of women aged 70 or over suffer from female pattern baldness.
In addition to alcohol, hair loss can be caused by illness, stress, weight loss, certain cancer treatments, and iron deficiency.
For older women, hormonal changes associated with menopause also contribute to hair loss.
