Hair is mainly made up of a protein called keratin which also makes nails and forms the outer protective layer of the skin. The NHS says: “Biotin is needed in very small amounts to help the body make fatty acids. Bacteria that naturally live in your gut are able to make biotin, so it’s not clear if you need extra biotin in the diet. Biotin is also found in a wide range of foods, but only at very low levels.
The Click chemist says biotin can help fight hair loss and can help produce thicker hair.
“It works by preventing damage to hair follicles and strengthens hair to prevent hair loss. Sources of biotin include nuts, eggs, and meat,” the organization explains.
The Cleveland Clinic says biotin is found in many foods, including eggs, fish, meat, seeds, nuts, sweet potatoes, broccoli, and cauliflower.
The NHS says there is not enough evidence to know what the effects of taking high daily doses of biotin supplements might be.

Some wigs are available on the NHS, but you may have to pay unless you qualify for financial support.
Other hair loss treatments include steroid injections and creams, as well as immunotherapy.
Some people also choose to undergo hair transplantation, which is when the hair is removed from the back of the head and moved to thinning plates.
The Cleveland Clinic states, “It is important to note that premenopausal women should not take medication for the treatment of hair loss without using birth control.
“Many medications, including minoxidil and finasteride, are not safe for pregnant women or women who want to become pregnant.”
The Mayo Clinic says, “You may want to try different hair care methods to find one that makes you feel better about how your hair looks.
“For example, use styling products that add volume, color your hair, choose a hairstyle that makes an enlarged part less visible, or use wigs or extensions. Always treat your hair gently.
The NHS also warns: “Consult a GP to get a clear idea of the cause of your hair loss before you think about going to a commercial hair clinic.”
