Hairdresser and nail technician, Ronel Amukena (27) lives his professional life in a world that requires mental strength, endurance and good time management.

She started hairdressing and manicuring in high school to support herself.

“I was in a school where there was no hostel, so I had to find accommodation for myself, buy food and pay for my own transportation,” she told Youth Corner. .

His then school, Sesheke High School, was 100 kilometers from Katima Mulilo, which made meeting clients in town difficult. Sometimes she would meet clients on weekends and end up missing school on Monday and sometimes Tuesday.

The passion for hairdressing and nails started at a young age, Amukena said, adding that she was helping her mother in the beauty industry.

Last month, she graduated in acrylic from Kiwi Nailbar and Spa.

Amukena, a first year student at the University of Namibia, also sells fruit and vegetables that she imports from Zambia and South Africa to Tsumeb, Otavi and the Stop and Shop Market in Windhoek.

“Selling fruits and vegetables in general is very beneficial as the income I receive covers my daily needs, including food and paying bills.”

Worker Amukena said she was starting farming in Katima Mulilo so she wouldn’t have to import from neighboring countries.

She proudly revealed that she is now financially savvy and motivated, stating, “You don’t have to depend on anyone all the time. You have to make the impossible happen.”

Amukena however admitted that she sometimes struggles with time management because “school has its endless academic stress”.

Restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic also had a huge impact on his small business, as borders were closed and collection restrictions minimized his nail and hair business operations.

However, it is currently rebounding and profits are gradually increasing.
