Award-winning hairstylist Darrel Starkey looks back on his journey and inspires the younger generation on how to achieve their goals
The hairdressing industry is full of creative people, all of whom share a common goal: to simply create. The hairdressing industry in the UK is one of the fastest growing industries around and as we know things are constantly changing and evolving and new life is joining our creative team.
Now, a few years into my career, I look back at where I started, how far I’ve come, and how far I’ve come – I never thought I could have come this far in such a short time. In such a large industry, showcasing yourself, showing what you can do, and pushing your own limits can be tough and it’s definitely a lot tougher than it looks.
When I first joined the industry, I had absolutely no idea what was in store for me – I just wanted to learn everything I could, absorb every ounce of knowledge and learn anything and everything. related to hair. I never realized how deep the education is, how many opportunities and paths become available, and how many amazing friendships I would make along the way.
Now that I am teaching and educating the younger generation, the question I am often asked is how? “How did you get where you are? It’s a question I like to answer, because I was the youngest a few years ago and I was in their shoes. I know how hard you have to work, how much effort you have to put in and also the desire to succeed.
For me, there were a few different things that helped me get to where I am, and I share them at every opportunity to inspire others to do the same – you can accomplish anything if you put your mind to it. Your spirit.
Engage in your career
If you want anything in life to be successful, you have to commit to it.
It’s something that will not only help you succeed, but will be recognized by others in the industry and will resonate with them as well – remember, first impressions count.
Your commitment and drive will take you through the different levels of your career and also through the ups and downs (yes, there are both), but will make you even more passionate about succeeding and getting where you want to be.
Show your commitment by always going the extra mile, asking questions, working extra days, and sticking to your job. You will never regret signing up.
Network your way
A lot of people ask me how I know so many different people in the industry and the answer is simple – I just talked to them.
It can be daunting when you see or meet someone you aspire to be or admire in the industry, but always remember that they were at your position or level once and they don’t loves nothing more than meeting those who share the same passion. like them.
Social media is a great way to interact, meet people, and engage with other like-minded people, but whenever possible, attend events and introduce yourself.
Do everything and participate in everything you can
Immersing yourself in the industry is a great way to progress.
For me, I (always) attended every possible event, exhibition, show and talk because it only enhances my career, my network of contacts and my knowledge of the industry.
Whether educationally or socially, being seen is something that helps your career and allows you to meet new people you might never have met before.
At these events and releases you also get access to some of the most iconic names in the industry and from there you can only improve and progress.
Ask for help
Never think you are alone in the industry – there is always someone to help or ready to help in every avenue and to cover every area.
Never feel like you’re alone or don’t understand something, asking for help is all you have to do.
Within our industry, sharing and helping each other is how we grow and evolve together and it’s something I’ve stuck with and is the reason for my own personal growth.
Tip number one: be yourself.
Our industry is all about individuality and being yourself and that’s all you need to be yourself.
Show your true self and be confident that you can accomplish anything, build amazing relationships, and benefit from exceptional opportunities.
Being something you are not will only go against you, so be the person you are inside!
