The Children’s Commissioner for England, Dame Rachel de Souza, has said the spanking of children should be banned, and we want to hear your opinion on the matter.
Wales took the decision to implement a ban last month (March), following Scotland where a ban has been in place since November 2020.
Speaking to Times Radio, De Souza said: “I absolutely hate, and am against, violence of any kind against children. Because children are more vulnerable than adults, I think we have to ensure that their rights are respected. »

Some readers have already had their say, including one spanking supporter saying: ” That’s why we have young savages running amok with no respect for anything or anyone because there are no consequences.
“Yes, we got a slap, a caning, a clip around the ear from a neighbor or the local bobby. It was called a short, sharp shock that put you in your place and taught you discipline and respect.”
However, many were in favor of a ban, with one person responding: “To gain discipline and respect, you need consistency, not snapping.
“To say that kids these days are more likely to be delinquents because they haven’t been hit is ridiculous, the best brought up kids have emotionally regulated parents who can show how to handle themselves in difficult situations”
Someone else added: “It’s crazy how we all expect spanking an adult to be illegal, but think it’s perfectly fine to hit a child.”
Another reader also pointed out: “Yes, we used to hit children, but we also allowed children to buy gin and watch public executions. Society evolves and evolves, what was acceptable ten years ago is now seen as unacceptable.”
