Willow Smith’s pop-punk beauty look at the Reading Festival on August 28 was one for the festival hall of fame. The “Wait a minute!” The singer has never been afraid to experiment with her look, from buzz cuts to full-scale tattoo sleeves, and rocked that edgy style onstage in the form of dental jewelry, deep silver chrome nails and armpit hair.
While Smith raising her tattoo-covered arms to reveal her body hair might seem like a stance against society’s beauty standards, it’s actually not the case for the singer. Smith has been growing out her armpit hair for a few years simply because it’s easier. In a 2018 episode of “Red Table Talk,” she explained to her mother and grandmother that she “didn’t really make the decision not to shave, I just didn’t shave. It’s taking too long. I just want to get in the shower and get out of the shower… I’m going to be like my ancestors and just do what I have to do.”
The entertainer – who has joined a star lineup including Megan Thee Stallion, Arctic Monkeys, Bring Me the Horizon, Halsey and The 1975 – also has a fondness for dental jewelry. She regularly flaunts her sparkling smile, whether it’s dental jewelry or grillz, on Instagram, so it’s no surprise she decided to wear the look for the festival.
Rocking behind her guitar, Smith was dressed in a tartan miniskirt, a ripped white tank top with flannel detailing, black knee-high socks and Converse, a woolen hat and aviator sunglasses 70s style. Complementing the emo aesthetic with colorful bead jewelry, Smith looked at ease on stage as she performed in front of thousands of people. As a punk-pop muse, Smith’s refreshing take on body hair makes her a rock star role model. Ahead, check out her Reading Festival look.
